Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues are South Africa's biggest parody pop group of all-time... according to their Twitter page. The comedy pop duo, Gareth Allison and Nic Smal, originate from Cape Town and are best known for their YouTube videos Braaiday and The Car Guard Song, which parody music by Rebecca Black and Eminem, while poking fun at South African braai and parking etiquette.

The group's name, Derick Watts & The Sunday Blues, was derived from renowned presenter and journalist, Derek Watts and M-NET's long-running Sunday evening investigative report show, Carte Blanche.

The talented comedy group formed after Nic approached Gareth with the idea for the Rebecca Black parody video of Friday to be known as Braaiday... the rest as they say is history. In their latest YouTube video, Dericks Watts & The Sunday Blues parody Gotye's Someone I Used to Know, Afrikaans pop music culture with their splinternuwe treffer Vat My Jol and themselves in Behind the LOLs, a short mockumentary with a host of local celebrity talking heads including: Rob van Vuuren, Siv Ngesi, The Brothers Streep, Bouwer Bosch, Grant Hinds and a special guest.

These guys are South Africa's answer to Flight of the Conchords and have only just begun their quest for global domination. Before they get their own reality TV show and a feature length mockumentary, we decided to find out more about their taste in movies... so we can see what inspired them and so we can offhandedly lie that SPL!NG discovered them. I can't watch movies without...

- Gareth: ...something to drink - I get thirsty easily.

- Nic: ...popcorn so heavily laced with salt and vinegar spice, my tongue hurts for a day afterwards.

Which famous people share your birthday?

- Gareth: Hmm, interesting question. I'm guessing... Johnny Depp? *googles* Dammit. Danny de Vito. Oh, and Martin Scorcese. That makes me an honorary gangster, right? Also, Lorne Michaels, the guy behind Saturday Night Live, as well as one of the brothers in Hanson. (hesitates) Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that last one.

- Nic: Eminem, Wyclef Jean & apparently Evel Knievel.

What is the first film you remember watching?

- Gareth: First ever in my life, or at the cinema? At the cinema, it was a film called The Bear. First movie outside the cinema? Sheesh... probably a Disney movie on a Sunday evening during M-NET Open Time. Remember, they used to split a movie over two weeks, one hour each week? Classic.

- Nic: Probably Disney's Snow White & The Seven Dwarves at the cinema in East London.

What's the worst movie you've ever seen?

- Gareth: Late One Night, Rubber and The Hottie & The Nottie were all pretty painful to sit through. Also, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford". That movie promised so much, yet moved at the pace of an elderly snail on muscle relaxants. It was also unnecessarily long... the film, not the snail.

- Nic: Jack & Jill, sorry Adam Sandler... but what were you thinking?

Which movies have made you tearful?

- Gareth: Marley & Me for sure. I was doing fine, and then completely lost it right at the end. Dammit. So close.

- Nic: Finding Neverland, The Lion King and Jack & Jill.

Who is the most famous movie star you've ever met?

- Gareth: I've never met a movie star. Thanks for bringing that up.

- Nic: I walked past Heather Graham in Santa Monica once. Our eyes met, briefly, does that count?

What's your favourite movie line?

- Gareth: It's more of a short exchange from the first Austin Powers movie:

Vanessa: "Did you use protection?"
Austin: "Of course... I had my 9mm automatic."
Vanessa: "You know I mean, did you use a...condom?
Austin: "Only sailors use condoms, baby!"
Vanessa: "Not in the 90's, Austin!"
Austin: "Well they should, those filthy beggars, they go from port to port."

- Nic: 'Harry, your hands are freezing'. - Dumb & Dumber

Who would you choose to play you in your biopic?

- Gareth: Er... someone dashing, classically handsome, a real presence and gravity to him... probably Rob Schneider. Nic would be played by a random hipster on Kloof Street.

- Nic: I'm not sure, but I would choose Zac Galifinakis to play Gareth in his.

If you could produce a movie, what would it be about?

- Gareth: Hmmm, good question. Okay; a man wakes up one morning to find that he has switched bodies with his pet dog. This results in some hilarious scenes of him lifting his leg on a fire hydrant as well as digging holes in the garden and burying bones - really classy comedy. He then has to travel back in time to discover how his body got switched and ends up stranded on a deserted island, where weird things begin happening. He then discovers that he has been dreaming the entire time and is five levels deep in the dream - he has to enlist the help of a renegade who was once the ultimate killing machine, but now lives in solitude after losing his wife to the Russians.

The duo, despite being polar opposites and working on each others' nerves, join forces to win a bet by transforming a dull, nerdy girl into a stunning beauty just in time for the prom. The movie builds to a climax when aliens attack New York (yes, AGAIN), interrupting the prom, and the dog-man and the renegade save the day by distracting the aliens with a one-camera "found footage" short horror film, making them sick from all the shaky camerawork and bad sound. Did I mention that these two unlikely allies drop pop-culture quips and slang throughout? Shockingly, I haven't been able to sell this script as of yet; for any interested parties reading this, the rights are still up for grabs. Call me.

- Nic: It would be about a wave that goes around the world in search of the perfect surfer.

Gareth's top ten movies of all-time...

- Dumb & Dumber ...a true comedy classic. Nervous about the new sequel that's coming out in 2013 - at least Carrey and Daniels will be back for it. In my world, Dumb & Dumberer never existed.

- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ...mind-bending and touching, makes me feel all emotional inside and stuff. Jim Carrey's best role? Possibly, possibly...

- Billy Madison ...love Chris Farley's cameo in this one; one of the old-school Adam Sandler films before he inexplicably started making crap like Jack & Jill. Why, Adam, why? I'm still hoping for a renaissance from him.

- Zombieland ...because Woody Harrelson is awesome, Emma Stone is awesome and Jesse Eisenberg does a pretty good job playing Michael Cera.

- The War ...I love movies set in the past - not too far back though. I often wonder what it would have been like to live in the 1950s/60s/70s. There's something really appealing about it, although of course there would be drawbacks to it as well.

- The Dark Knight ...not to be confused with Black Knight starring Martin Lawrence - ergh

- Ed Wood ...there's something about this movie that I can't get enough of - the trashy B-grade movies he made, Bela Lugosi... utterly fascinating.

- Prince of Tides ...just kidding; I put this in to seem sensitive - ladies love that kind of thing. You'll edit this out, right?"

- This Is Spinal Tap ...comedy at it's finest - apparently for several years afterwards, many people, including Liam Gallagher from Oasis, thought that they were a real band. They've since released more music and done some touring, but this movie is still an essential for ANYONE who has ever been in a band or been part of the music industry. Quality.

- Jurassic Shark ...yes, you read that correctly - Jurassic SHARK. I bought a copy before they were legally obligated to change the title - big surprise, right? I can honestly say it's the best R50 I've ever spent. Horrible acting, terrible lip-sync and special effects that were probably done by a sleeping child, it doesn't get much more entertaining than this. Also known as "Megalodon 3", which, sadly, is nowhere near as good as it's original title.
