The Galileo Open Air Cinema (Movies Under the Stars)

The Low Down

The Galileo Open Air Cinema has quickly become a Cape Town favourite with weekly screenings at Bloemendal on Tuesdays, Kirstenbosch on Wednesdays, V&A Waterfront on Thursdays, rotating venues such as Fedisa's rooftop cinema in Cape Town, the Castle of Good Hope on Fridays and surrounding wineland venues on Saturdays.

If you miss the open air feeling of watching a double feature at one of Cape Town's drive in cinemas, you can rekindle the joy by parking off picnic style! From classic movies to sports documentaries, you can watch a movie under the stars and enjoy a craft beer, barista coffee or handcrafted fast food from the mobile food market. Galileo Open Air Cinema prices start from R89 (R79 online), which includes access to these venues. While seasonal, it can get quite cold - so be sure to dress warmly and take an extra cushion. Check out the Galileo's movie program and book tickets.

How to Book Movie Tickets

The Galileo Cinema provides a full schedule of film screenings and venues for the upcoming season. You can purchase printable tickets through Webtickets using a credit card or at the venue, provided they haven't sold out. Ticket details are issued via SMS and email in the week of your movie. Since the open air cinema screenings take place outdoors, weather plays a major factor and if wind or rain prevents them from showing a film, they will give you the option to select another movie or process a refund, be sure to do this within 7 days.

Special Features

Galileo movie tickets range from R89-R175 when you book online. You can elect a ticket to get you entry only, or include add-ons such as a blanket and back rest. The VIP package can only be booked online and includes: a back rest (chair), blanket, premium reserved seating, popcorn and sweets.

Popcorn & Refreshments

You can take your own picnic cooler bag and blanket, or you can buy popcorn, gourmet food and soft drinks at each of the venues. Galileo's mobile food market gives you the option to buy paella, pizza, nachos or burgers from R50-R100 and the Galileo have barista coffee, craft beer and wine available. No alcohol of any kind is permitted into wine estates, including Bloemendal.

Cheats & Tips

Book online to get your tickets cheaper, or book a VIP experience. Seating is unreserved, so get to the venue just after 6pm if you want a good seat, a parking place close to the exit or if you're lucky, promotional sample product. You'll see the screen wherever you sit, but the middle area is best or right at the front if you want extra leg room. The screening starts just after dark, so if you'd prefer to swoop in at the last minute, make sure you get there just after sunset.

Sitting picnic style for a couple of hours and watching a movie can become uncomfortable, so take a cushion and rent a back rest from the Galileo Open Air Cinema. It gets quite cold after sunset, so take a jacket and blanket - a flask of hot coffee or cocoa would make you very popular with friends. Now that you've had a chance to review the facts, you know how to make movie night romantic and memorable. Find out what's showing and book your movie tickets here.
