It's Complicated Movie Review: Two Sides to the Story

It's Complicated Movie Poster

It's Complicated... initially a statement describing one's love life as being in limbo is now a Facebook relationship status and a Nancy Meyers film, starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. The film has received added publicity during awards season for Streep's Best Actress nominations and after watching the film you can see why. She's the focus of this "I don't wanna go there" romance and shows off yet another fantastic comedy performance after her role as the flamboyant Julia Childs in Julie & Julia. This is Streep's film from the get-go and while she's ably supported by both Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin like a good bra, she head and shoulders above.

There's an air of her character from Mamma Mia as she twists out of post-divorce depression into a complicated web of hedonistic relationships... starting with a one night stand with her ex-husband (Baldwin) and bungling into a sweet relationship with her architect (Martin). Naturally there's plenty of scope for love as marriage, divorce and dating gets their fair share of heart on the butcher's table.

It's Complicated, really isn't... it's a two-sided affair in many respects. The first half being domineered by comedy and Jane's lasting anguish from her divorce and the new woman to falling in "love" with Jake again. The second half is stoked with drama as Jane's emotional roller coaster ride sees both stags suit up for the affections of Jane. The film functions much like your typical romantic comedy, bristling with laugh and excitement in the first half and...continued.

The Book of Eli Movie Review: Afro Samurai

The Book of Eli Movie Poster

I know I’m stating the obvious here, but Denzel Washington is not Mr. T. They act, dress and talk differently… Mr. T carries that Mad Max era cool like someone before their time and while he’s been off the Hollywood scene beating Cancer and endorsing cooking gadgets in an apron, this could have been his defining Tarantino Phoenix Performance… yet, the title character role in The Book of Eli still went to Denzel… FOOLS!

I know it would be difficult to get over the fact that B.A. from The A-Team is Eli, but The Book of Eli isn’t that serious, Mr. T’s spiritual background, age and cult appeal fit right in with the nomadic character of Eli… and without Washington, they’d be able to afford some decent special effects, on-location shooting and maybe even a trilogy… DAMN!

If you watched Bravestarr as a kid or more recently as a giant toddler, you’ll get a whiff of the Marshall here. Eli’s a bit of a drifter, wandering in from out of town sporting the strength of the bear, the speed of the puma… blah, blah, blah. He’s on a top secret spiritual mission and preys prays on the people that aren’t trying to kill him. His precious cargo, a book of divine secrets, holds the key to saving mankind and as usual… some megalomaniac evil “mastermind” in the form of Tex Hex (Oldman) wants it all for...continued.

Quentin Tarantino's recipe: add a handful of spaghetti Westerns and a dash of WW2 comic books and you've got Inglourious Basterds, a fictional account of a special task force destined for Nazi-occupied France, where terror was used as a strategy to cast fear into the hearts of young Nazi soldiers wanting to keep their scalps. Dumbo Movie PosterDUMBO (1941)

Dumbo is a Walt Disney classic in every respect:  from its fun, lovable characters to the sweet, endearing and innocent story of the elephant that could. This 1941 animated feature is timeless for its touching story about reaching one's true potential and for its Oscar-winning score. While kids will be aware of its old style 2D animation, they won't be able to resist being enthralled by its funny, heartwarming and innocent circus tale. At just over 60 minutes, Dumbo's very rewatchable.

Adam Movie PosterADAM (2009)
Director: Max Mayer
Starring: Hugh Dancy, Rose Byrne
Genre: Drama, Romance, Comedy
Age Restriction: 13PG L

Rain Man gave Dustin Hoffman a platform to shine as some of the mysteries behind autism were given front page attention. Hugh Dancy does the same for Asperger's Syndrome, a condition closely associated with autism. This realistic portrayal is sensitive, tender and sweet as we come to identify with Adam's romantic dilemna. The New York charm and solid lead performances add to this simple, yet sweet love story.

Smart People Movie PosterSMART PEOPLE (2008)
Director: Noam Murro
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page, Thomas Haden Church
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Age Restriction: 13PG L

This character-driven dramedy takes a slice-of-life from a pompous, eccentric Professor and widower (Quaid) and explores the relationships around his dysfunctional home with his low-life brother (Haden Church), an impressionable daughter (Page), a distant son and a new girlfriend (Parker), who used to have a student crush on him. The comedy is a little prickly, the situation is rife with comic scenarios... a curious blend of Sideways and The Family Stone. While Smart People boasts a savvy cast, the narrative is more concerned with the character's transitions and may come across as a little scatter-shot and depressing at times.
