Trailer Showdown: Zombieland vs. Shaun of the Dead

Zombieland Movie Poster

Halloween may be over... but not for Hollywood! Zombieland is the latest zombedy (zombie + comedy) to hit the screen with Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland), Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine), Emma Stone (Superbad) and yes, even Bill Murray... as himself!

It's a fun, thrill-packed and wild ride of mayhem, splattered brains and Bill Murray. Harrelson and Eisenberg play a ragtag team of zombie survivors, who are playing according to the rules of surviving Zombieland and making their way across the lost American wasteland. It's great to see Harrelson, playing what could be described as an American Crocodile Dundee... Zombie Dundee if you will and Eisenberg playing the same dorky, yet likable underdog character from Adventureland.

As entertaining and cult-centric as Zombieland may be, it must give some respect to one of the first real commercial zombedies... Shaun of the Dead with the legendary Simon Pegg of Spaced and Hot Fuzz. Shaun of the Dead's wicked sense of humour, buddy story, indie romance and zombie frenzy seemed to have it all... even armed with a cricket bat instead of the obligatory weapon of choice associated with baseball big-hitters.

Zombieland has the stuff of a classic horror comedy, but does it have the goods on British cult sensation, Shaun of the Dead? Well, let's see if a trailer match-up can give us any indication of a clear winner or loser in the epic battle for the Ultimate Commercial Zombedy

This week's Trailer Showdown is between the official Zombieland HD trailer and the Shaun of the Dead trailer.

Fan Friday: Kingdom of Heaven DVD

Kingdom Of Heaven
Kingdom of Heaven
is a film by legendary Gladiator director, Ridley Scott, starring Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), co-starring Liam Neeson (Rob Roy) and written by William Monahan (The Departed). It's a 12th century epic based on the travels of Balian of Ibelin, who travelled to Jerusalem during the crusades to defend the city and its people.

Orlando Bloom takes the lead in this historical epic, making the on-screen transition from boy to man. While getting to grips with his own personal saga he is swept up in the throes of war - traversing from Europe to Israel, where Jersualem is forced to defend itself against impending Islamic armies in a holy war.

Kingdom of Heaven is rare, because it tries to engender an objective perspective on this time in history, representing its story from a level-headed disposition instead of vilifying one group or another. The swirling narrative is large in scope and some would say Balian's personal journey comes full circle and levels out before the call to battle is even heard.

It positions itself with other sweeping historical epics like Gladiator, Joan of Arc and Braveheart. Bloom handles the role with amazing dexterity, Neeson steadies the ship with his experience and Scott's battle sequences are extraordinary. Kingdom of Heaven is a historical action adventure that will make an excellent addition to your DVD collection.

A Kingdom of Heaven DVD is up for grabs for Fan Friday on the SPL!NG page on Facebook. If you want to stand a chance to win fantastic giveaways like this every week, join up... here.

Trailer Showdown: 2012 vs. The Day After Tomorrow

2012 movie posterGerman film director, Roland Emmerich is one of the highest grossing film directors of all-time (18th at the time of writing) with $945 Million to his name. If you thought his salary was big, you should see his films! Stargate, Independence Day, Godzilla, The Patriot, The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 B.C. and now 2012 cluster a blockbuster filmography spanning two decades.

Emmerich describes his films as 'popcorn' movies, stating that he's a film-maker, not a scientist. While the general consensus amongst critics is that most of his films are plagued by scientific/historical inaccuracies, cliched dialogue, illogical plot development, lack of character depth and an over-reliance on special effects, he continues to make his movies, often as producer, screenwriter and director.

Fellow German counterpart, Uwe Boll is comparable with Emmerich, not in scope or work rate, but in perseverance. While neither of these directors are likely to rake in Best Director accolades, they both seem to continue, despite criticism, fueled by a passion for film-making and armed with a sixth sense for movies by numbers.

2012 is yet another earthquake disaster film in the pipeline for release later this year, which exploits a doomsday event according to the Mayan long count calendar, scheduled for 21 December, 2012. The 2012 movie will probably overshadow The Day After Tomorrow in terms of special effects and catastrophe, boasting a recognised cast including: John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Woody Harrelson. However, it's worth pitting both of Emmerich's film's trailers against each other in Trailer Showdown to predict which one will go down in history as a bigger box office blockbuster or failure!

This week's Trailer Showdown is between the official 2012 HD trailer and The Day After Tomorrow trailer.
