Fan Friday: Forrest Gump DVD

Forrest Gump
Forrest Gump
is a Robert Zemeckis film that ingratiated itself in American culture with the fictional character of Forrest Gump. It's a sweet, inspiring and remarkable film with a passion for story-telling, a nostalgic soundtrack and an unforgettable performance from Tom Hanks. "Mama always said life's like a box of chocolates... You never know what you're gonna get." and "Run Forrest, Run" will live on as if Forrest's fantastic coming-of-age biography were true.

It's an American tale that expresses the Zeitgeist of each decade as Forrest makes a name for himself in college football, ping-pong, running, Vietnam and shrimp fishing... finding himself in the right place at the right time. His natural charm, simple innocence and sense of integrity see him through dark days as he traces Jenny, the girl of his dreams. Her life is something of an antithesis to Forrest's as she makes all the wrong decisions, flying by night and against the wind.

All in all, Forrest Gump is a touching, uplifting drama and classic piece of down-to-earth Americana... a must-see and a must own. With six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Director, it will remain an all-time favourite in your collection for many years to come. You don't own it!? Luckily, it's up for grabs this Fan Friday and you could be feeling the triumphs, setbacks and all-round American experience through the eyes of dear old Forrest if you join the SPL!NG page below.

Trailer Showdown: New Moon vs. New Moon Spoof Trailer

Twilight - New Moon Movie PosterThe Twilight Saga continues with New Moon, the sequel to Twilight, a romantic fantasy series based on the bestselling novels by Stephenie Meyer. The first installation focussed on the personal relationship between human, Isabella "Bella" Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), as Edward tried to protect Bella from a group of hostile vampires. The filmmakers committed themselves to a faithful adaptation of the book, while aiming for the best movie they could make.

New Moon's trailer and marketing materials seem to suggest the formation of a love triangle between Edward, Jacob and Bella. Summit Entertainment's official synopsis reads "Bella Swan is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen, but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested."

The franchise's box office success will clear the path for further sequels in The Twilight Saga with Stephenie Meyer's novels, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. Eclipse has been given the green light, however it has been revealed that New Moon director Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass) will not be directing part three. David Slade (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night) has signed on and is currently filming, Eclipse. The series has a similar arc to Harry Potter, which was also a bestselling fantasy series of novels, was adapted to film, formed a saga of sequels, elevated the star status of several previously unknown actors and grew darker and darker with each installation.

Twilight fans are aching to see New Moon, and if the South African pre-release booking numbers are anything to go by, it looks like the dark series will continue to give fans the paranormal romance they're looking for...

This week's Trailer Showdown is between the official New Moon trailer and the New Moon spoof trailer.

Fan Friday: Alien (2-Disc) Box Set

Alien Movie Poster
Alien is a film that people try to forget... not because it was bad, but because it's been replicated in so many Sci-Fi/Horrors that it has redefined the genre and claimed deep space. It's hard to watch a deep space science fiction movie and not think of at least one element from Alien.

The success of the film has led to a number of sequels and spin-offs, which have all managed to capture some of the spirit from the original. The film has been hugely influential. Ridley Scott's career is renowned for films like Alien and Blade Runner. Sigourney Weaver's acting portfolio has been defined by her brute role in the Alien saga.

Alien was a monumental film in it's time and the scream from that classic scary trailer, still reverberates today. Timeless cinema is hard to come by and it's that quality that has made the film so contemporary. The massive sets, the before-their-time special effects... the performances, direction... what is there not to like about the film?

Alien has been digitally-restored in all its glory with a second disc loaded with special features to give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what went into the making of this Sci-Fi epic. This edition contains the original 1979 theatrical version and the 2003 Director's cut, digitally restored and recut by Ridley Scott himself!

An Alien (2-Disc) Box Set is up for grabs for Fan Friday on the SPL!NG page on Facebook. If you want to stand a chance to win fantastic giveaways like this every week, join up... here.
